Qualified Professionals

Hayley Sexton

Principal and founder, teacher of Tap, Modern, Jazz and Rising Stars Performance Academy.

Approved DDE tutor for the ISTD

Hayley Sexton established the dance school in 1996, having passed both her ISTD associates in Tap and Modern dance. The school quickly grew, along with her passion for teaching. Over the past 20 years she has continued to further her knowledge and currently holds both ISTD Licentiate and Fellowship qualifications – something she is incredibly proud of. Her wealth of teaching knowledge and experience has also given her the opportunity to become an Approved Tutor for the ISTD – allowing her to teach the DDI/DDE teacher training course. She is currently teaching this at South Downs college and privately at her own school. As an educator, Hayley considers it a huge privilege to be able to pass on her experience and knowledge to the future generations of dancers and teachers. Many of her students have continued their dancing professionally, gaining places at prestigious dance colleges such as Urdang, Performers College, Doreen Bird, and Italia Conti. She has also had a finalist at Britain’s Got Talent, and numerous dancers currently performing in the West End.

Lucy Cowdery

Teacher of Ballet and body conditioning

Lucy trained as a scholarship student at The Legat School of Classical Ballet from the age of 13 and continued her professional training at The Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary dance.
After graduating in 1998, she spent a summer furthering her training at The Merce Cunningham School in New York.
In 2000 Lucy became a founder member of The Ballet Boyz new company, George Piper Dances, travelling Europe with its South Bank Awards nominated show, Pointless.
Repertoire for the company includes Sigue by Paul Lightfoot & Sol Leon of Nederlands Dans Theatre, Truly Great Things by Charles Linehan, Tangoid by Michael Nunn and William Trevitt, and Moments of Plastic Jubilation by Michael Nunn and William Trevitt.
After a break from dancing travelling the world, Lucy settled in Portsmouth and decided to turn her hand to teaching, specialising in Ballet and Contemporary dance. She is qualified to teach ISTD Ballet & modern, progressing ballet technique, and has been an associate lecturer in Ballet at the University of Chichester for over ten years.

Helen Wallis

Teacher of Tap, modern, jazz and Dinky Dancers

Helen began dancing at the age of 9 years old, training at the Williams School of dance in Southsea and despite a relatively late start, she quickly became proficient in Tap, Modern, Jazz and Ballet. However, it was in Tap and Modern that she truly excelled and between 1996 and 1998 she passed her Associate exams in these with distinctions. Helens real love has always been in teaching rather than performance and she has been passing on her knowledge and experience for almost 30 years with a fervour that she hopes will inspire her pupils. For the last 15 years Helen has been teaching at the Hayley Sexton School of Dance where she is mainly engaged in syllabus work for ISTD although she also enjoys her involvement in a ‘Dinky Dancers’ class for 18-month olds onward. In her delivery of instruction, she is a perfectionist with a talent for drawing out the best in her students, taking a real pride in results and deriving her own reward from seeing their success.
